As our lifestyles evolve at an ever-faster pace, we increase the risk of huge errors. Just now Western society is seeing the error of nutritional shifts to a centrally distributed fast food way of eating. The result has been rampant obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and more. Now we face and even greater unknown that could have profoundly negative affects on our health.
Genetically modified foods may be mankind's greatest boon or our worst disaster. Excerpts from an article entitled "Sides are Drawn in European Genetic Engineering Argument" by Charles Drace, the New Zealand GMO expert on Natural Awakening's panel of experts, outlines the controversy of GMOs now.
He states:
"The French commission for genetic engineering (CGB) has become worried about marketing of GM MY 863 corn after studying the results of an experiment on rats. Experts expressed reservations about MY 863 because it contains an antibiotic resistance gene that could cause antibiotic resistance in humans if eaten."
This problem with antibiotic resistance has caused the European Union to demand that Spain withdraw a GE crop from the market.
Drace further reports:
"A group of animals fed Monsanto's MY 863 corn for 90 days was compared with a control group of rats fed with the same corn, but not GE modified.
"The French commission for genetic engineering (CGB) worried about many biological effects: significant increase in the white blood cells and lymphocytes in the males of the batch fed with the MY 863; reduced levels of reticulocytes (immature red blood cells) in the females; significant increase in blood sugar in the females; higher frequency of anomalies (inflammation, regeneration) in kidneys of the males. (Le Monde)
"According to Dr. Erik Millstone, Sussex University, "The fundamental problem of the way in which GM foods have been approved is that they haven't really been tested properly at all. All that has happened is something which I would characterize as an exercise in wishful thinking.
"The controversy rises because The European Food Safety Authority, on April 19 gave the green light for this corn to be marketed. (LE MONDE, 22.04.04).
"Little changes in on our lives, water temperatures, a little chemical in our water or some toxicity from genetic modifications in our food could have profound implications to our future health. This is a problem of which every consumer should become more educated and aware."
