Chemo for Fat

Cancer researchers have found a new way to eliminate obesity with altering eating habits. A U.S. News & World Reports article says that cancer researchers have found a new therapy called "molecular liposuction" that causes fat cells to die.

The technology is similar to cancer therapy that restricts blood supply to cancer cells. This new approach to fighting the flab, is a drug that kills blood vessels only in white fat. In a study which appears in the June 2004 issue of Nature Medicine, mice were plumped up to double their normal weight on a high calorie diet and then given the drug. They returned to normal weight in just four weeks.

Can this drug eliminate obesity and if so will it be good for society as a whole? The concepts taught by the Slow Food movement may suggest otherwise.

An article in the Asheville Citizen Times here says that the Slow Food movement helps local economy, farmers and restores a healthy tradition.

Slow Food helps restore mealtime as a social time while also helping preserve small farms.

The Slow Food movement began in Rome in 1986 as a protest against McDonald's and now has more than 65,000 adherents in 45 nations.

Slow Food is an educational organization dedicated to preserving food traditions, celebrating the pleasures of the table and embracing a slower, more harmonious rhythm of life.

Members of the movement say they have noticed area farmers switching to such specialty crops as organic produce and herbs.

The Slow Food concept tries to capture the spirit that gathered families around the dining-room table for a leisurely meal of homegrown foods spiced with conversation.

The Slow Food way can probably help reduce obesity, but will we need it if we can end the battle of the bulge with a simple drug instead?

Probably yes!

Slow Food, according to the movement is good for the body, but is also important to the family, society and even the economy. Today, too many "family" meals are gulped in front of the television or eaten by one person at a time between this and that commitment.

The Slow Food movement says "The Fast Life has changed our way of being and threatens our environment and our landscapes. Let us rediscover the flavors and savors of regional cooking and banish the degrading effects of Fast Food."
