Reduce Chemical Intake

This SLOWER Network message shows how to learn 20 ways to reduce your chemical intake.

According to organicconsumers.org The UK Guardian newspaper has released a brief consumer guide with some great techniques to maintain good hygiene while protecting your health.

Of the 20 tips, some favorites listed include:

* Avoid unnecessary use of products with a high sun protection factor. At night you don't need to use a moisturizer with an SPF.
* Become label savvy. Not everyone reads food labels. Do this and the same with your toiletries.
* The average make-up wearing woman will eat two pounds of lipstick in her life-time. Most lipsticks contain petroleum derivatives. Try brands based on beeswax, plant oils or vitamin E instead.
* Ask your granny for tips. Lemon juice, for example, has always been used as a beauty aid - to make fair hair shine, to soften hard skin, and get rid of blackheads. Cosmetics haven't always been all about products devised in laboratories.

P.S. This holiday give gifts that have environmental, health value such as coco oil.

Coconut oil is an edible oil that has been consumed in tropical places for thousands of years and was once prevalent in western countries like the United States as well. With a long shelf life and a melting point of 76 degrees, it was a favorite in the baking industry. But a negative campaign against saturated fats in general, and the tropical oils in particular, led to most food manufacturers abandoning coconut oil in recent years in favor of the polyunsaturated oils that come from the main cash crops in the US, particularly soy.

There is now mounting evidence of health benefits from coconut products, particularly coconut oil. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which is known for being anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal. Studies have shown effectiveness in lowering the viral load of HIV/AIDS patients. Coconut oil is being used by thyroid sufferers to increase body metabolism, and to lose weight.

Virgin coconut oil is also used for making natural soaps and other health products, as it is one of the healthiest things one can put on their skin. Ayurvedic physicians often recommend to massage with it.

Natural Organic Coconut Oil is available at most health food stores and makes great stocking stuffers.
